NLE or Non-Linear Editing is the way digital video is edited. Not using
the traditional analog method of 2 VCRs, but
employing dedicated high speed computers. The digital route gives better-quality images and sound, and tighter integration between the computer and the camera.
In NLE, the entire video is digitally
edited inside the computer. When ready, the final product (edited video) is
transferred to a DVD, tape, or multimedia file. Hence, the quality doesn't suffer--the final result looks exactly like the original footage. Subsequent copies also look identical, without the degradation in quality (known as generation loss in the video editing business).
Digital video also means the latest in compression technology, which produces high-quality images and sound. Digital is clearly the wave of the future.
